India unexpectedly knocked out of ICC T20 World Cup. All the team members were part of the IPL and had good match practice. All other foreign players who played in IPL are having game of there life in T20. Whether it is Chris Gayle, AB devillers and others. It was surprising barring Indian players all others who played in IPL are performing to the peak. Indians have been guilty of overdoing the T20 format. As rightly pointed out by coach Kirsten that the team lost because of fatigue. Dhoni can come up with other reasons as most Indian captain do, he cannot deny the negative impact of IPL on Indian players.
Take a example of hard hitting batsman Suresh Raina. He was not able to score runs in T20 world cup even though he was very successful in IPL. The basic flaw in his approach was, he played in the world cup as if he was playing for Chennai super kings and opposition was Mumbai Indians. Youngster like him needs to understand the importance of playing according to the situations, pitch and opposition. He should have assessed pitch, bowlers and conditions before going for heroics. That has been the story of all other batsman. Complacency can pull the team down. Dhoni besides his batting and keeping will have to work on complacency and avoid getting over exposed to any format.
The T20 exit also brings in an important point that matches cannot be won by individual. In recent past Tendulkar has been held responsible for not performing in crunch movement. God forbid if it would have been Tendulkar in Dhoni’s place he would have been gluttonized for not taking India to win. With two most powerful hitters of the ball at the crease India was not able to win, that clearly indicates that the game cannot be won by individual heroics it requires a team effort. The Indian cricket fraternity should take a lesson from this exit. Blaming Tendulkar or any other individual for team debacle is not fair. The teams are victorious only when all the 11 members play there part.
Another area which was not handled properly by Dhoni was of Shewag’s injury. It is important for Dhoni to understand that he has gifted opener at his perusal and he should use it properly. Players like Shewag need to be handled carefully. He can change the course of the game at any moment but at the same time can’t be consistent. Captain should be able to handle such players with responsibility and use them effectively. By getting involved in the controversy Dhoni has not only unsettled Shewag but also gave away the most lethal weapon in modern cricket. Dhoni should regain his senses and work on the errors while dealing with Shewag. At any given point Shewag is the asset to the team. Sourav Ganguly showed excellent leadership skill while dealing with dynamic Tendulkar and was successful in utilizing the potential of the genius. Dhoni should follow the same example.
There are other areas of captaincy in which Dhoni has erred. But I think he will learn through playing more cricket and working on mistakes.
As always this defeat is not the end of the world and I am pretty confident that Indian cricket team will come back with vengeance.
