Recently concluded One Day series against West Indies proved to be an eye opener for Indian fans. Not everything is perfect in current Indian team. Batting problems coupled with lack of experience made sure India gave dismissal performance against a struggling West Indies team (ranked lower in One day rankings).
The main culprit was Indian batting lineup, which was not able to adapt to the conditions in Caribbean. Lack of experience was evident from the shot selection by some youngsters. Let take case by case and access the reason for failure.
Suresh Riana: First tour to windies had no clue while batting. Surprisingly the same batsman was talk of town during recent series in India. Riana lacked temperament to play and learn in newer batting conditions. He played like he was playing in Indian conditions. Time for Raina to understand that in international cricket few performances cannot keep you in team.
Mahindra Singh Dhoni: Played few good shots but still lacked the composure and confidence by which he is known.
Ramesh Powar: Bowled badly on spinner friendly pitch. His fielding abilities was nuisance.
Rahul Dravid: For God’s sake you are not a opener. You are very good at no.3 or no. 4. Played only one worthwhile innings. Should reconsider his opening slot.
Irfan Pathan: Neither batsman nor a bowler. I think in pursuit of becoming a all rounder he lost his bowling also, I guess. Should concentrate on bowling first and then think of battling it out.
Venu Gopal Rao: And the selectors are accused of not giving enough chances to players. Venu Gopal rao is prime example of how to blow a chance.
List is long but I think the team should understand and learn for this defeat that complacency can be very dangerous.
The pick of the series was Ajit Agarkar. Way he bowled most of his spell showed the ability of an individual to adapt to the playing conditions in minimum amount of time. Hats off to his performance which once again proves that experience is of utmost importance.
Barring all this facts congrats to Lara’s Team for their excellent performance especially bowlers who bowled to a plan and kept the Indian batting in check. Absence of Sachin Tendulkar was once again felt in Indian camp. India would have used his experience in both bowling and batting department. Lets hope that his absence is not felt in test series and India displays a solid performance.
